On 29 August 2025 XLVIII the Republic of Molossia held a special commemoration of the twentieth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast of the United States on 29 August 2005 XXVIII, causing extensive damage throughout coastal Mississippi and Louisiana, culminating in the catastrophic flooding of the city of New Orleans. At least 1,836 people lost their lives in the actual hurricane and in the subsequent floods and total property damage was estimated at US $81 billion. The most severe loss of life occurred in New Orleans, Louisiana, which flooded as the levee system catastrophically failed, in many cases hours after the storm had moved inland. Eventually 80% of the city and large tracts of neighboring parishes became flooded, and the floodwaters lingered for weeks. New Orleans has long held a special place in the hearts of Molossians, and it caused us great grief to see the great city drowned and devastated. 29 August is always recognized as Katrina Day, in memory of lives lost, homes and livelihoods destroyed and the world of New Orleans changed forever. 2025 marked the twentieth anniversary of the hurricane, and on this day Molossians came together in The Swarmstead to remember the mighty storm and celebrate the unstoppable city of New Orleans. In the early evening a hurricane party was held. To the sounds of a hurricane the First Family gathered in the Great Room of The Swarmstead and had gumbo and cornbread and played games by candlelight. His Excellency, The President regaled the group with tales from Hurricane Katrina and a moment of silence was observed for the lives lost in the storm. New Orleans and the Gulf Coast have rebounded mightily in the past two decades but still the shadow of the terrible storm lingers and we shall never forget.
