On 23 August 2014 XXXVII, the magnificent Molossian Navy launched its latest voyage of exploration to Donner Lake in California. This expedition marked the fourth such voyage to the beautiful mountain lake since 2006 XXIX. The initial focus of this expedition was Donner Lagoon, which is an arm of Donner Lake. Donner Lake lies about 80 Imperial Nortons (80 km / 50 mi) from the Molossian Home Territory, high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Its namesake is the ill-fated Donner Party, which was stranded near here during the winter of 1846-1847, and suffered terrible hardships before finally being rescued.
The weather was cool and comfortable, with clouds subduing the recent heat. At about 2:00 PM Molossian Standard Time, the Molossian fleet set sail into Donner Lagoon, including the M.S. Bandicoot, the M.S. Platypus, the M.S. Manatee and an as yet unnamed additional vessel, piloted by our youngest sailor and Chief Constable, Alexis. Progress was steady and sedate, the water calm and generally free of obstacles. A few snags presented a minor challenge for our Navy's navigational skills, but they were easily overcome. At about the mid-point of the Lagoon, the flotilla paused for a lunch break, afloat. Afterward the fleet sailed to the south end of the Lagoon before returning to tiny 5 MPH island. Landing there, our brave sailors swam the Lagoon, making an attempt to survey the bottom. The water was cold and murky and the effort soon was abandoned. The decision was then made to set sail out into Donner Lake proper. This was the first successful foray out into the lake, previous attempts having been thwarted by rough water. The Navy explored along the lake shore for a while until daylight began to wane and it was decided to end the voyage.
The expedition complete, our brave Navy retired from the waters, and celebrated their mighty accomplishment at the McDonald's in nearby Truckee, before returning to Molossia.
Hooray for the Molossian Navy!
